Yes and No

I never really realized how important these two little words were as a form of communication between parent and child, until I had a child who could not say them. It is hard sometimes trying to guess what Russell wants...Yes he can sign certain things, cookie being his favorite...But when it comes to simple questions, asking him if he wants this or that, or wants to go here or there, it's hard figuring out some times exactly whats on his mind.

So we have been working on saying "Yes" and "No"...This first video shows how Russell usually acts when I ask him if he wants something. He will get all excited, jump up yelling "Ma" or "Mommy" over and over again, and take me to what he wants. At the end of the clip you can see me offer him his empty cup and he gets mad and turns his head and kind of growls...That is what he does instead of saying No.

So we are still working on No...But...We have had huge progress with the word Yes!

This past week if I ask Russell if he wants something he will give a quick nod and say "Ya"

This may not seem like a big deal to others, but to us this is huge! Russell being able to say those two little words, Yes and No, will take the guessing game away and make life a million times easier...And we're getting there, slowly but surely, we are getting there.

  3. Great progress! I always love seeing videos of him. Levi giggles when we guess right. That's his "yes" for now, I guess!

  4. We are right there with you! Owen does an excellent yes sign and will use it appropriately, but he refuses to use the no sign and instead runs away, hides his face, or yells. Yeah, we need to work on that! I love hearing Russell's little voice!!

  6. I've never really thought about how important yes and no were. For now, I can tell what Ben wants from his sounds or expressions. But as he gets older and has more specific needs I hope he be able to say yes and no to me too!

  8. Oh this is NOT little this is HUGE! It was and still the biggest communication tool we have...Maddie fars prefers yes/no to anything else...and it is huge for us because we feel some sort of normalcy with her...Russell is awesome! Growls are good as long is there is no bite! Smiles

  9. HUGE!!!! Sutter shakes his head yes or no but won't use the words...every now and then I think I hear him say no but it's not consistent. Keep up the hard work, those questions and answers are huge in combating the frustration!!

  10. Why won't my flipping IPad let me watch the videos?? So darn annoying! Yes and No are such powerful words, this breakthrough is fantastic news Jen? Ha Owens favorite word is "no" if fact he always answers any question with no before saying what he really means "yes!"

  13. I agree. I am so happy that Lucas can at least communicate with "no" and "ok." It is huge because I can ask him anything. So, Yay for Russell! OH and also, Lucas does the "mom, mom, mom, mom" thing too, so cute!

  14. We still have problems with yes too. Claire will say no, and then take what ever you give her. :)
